memory management

Hello,

I am running a kernel program on ixp425 with kernel 2.4.20, where the program keeps allocate and free memory. Using ‘top’ to look at the memory usage, the free memory keeps decreasing while the cached number is increasing.

The memory decreased until certain limit around 3M (128M total) and stop decreasing. It seems like there is a threshold on this free memory, where is this threshold defined? 

Is there a way to disable caching on the kernel?
