How to manually start gnome?

I had the same problem, "Init(x) respawning too fast", way back when and I
got around it by commenting out the following line in /etc/inittab:

#x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

That fixed it for me. HTH

Well, I just want to get the windowing system working at all. When it enters

init level 5, upon boot up, I get the typical error of "Init(x) respawning
too fast" which after much research I determined to mean that the X windows
subsystem isn't starting.
