Your point is well taken.  But I quote

   of LIDS on an average Linux installation. You will
   need to patch your kernel to use LIDS. So first you
   need to get yourself the vanilla kernel source from
   www.kernel.org. Do not use any kernel source that
   is provided with your distribution because that one
   will most likely be patched.

Where does this leave us?  I wonder if anyone has gotten
it to work, one way or the other.
