What are you after?  If you:

A.  Get the vanilla kernel, download, patch and install LIDS you will no
longer be running a RH supplied kernel and you're not entitled to
support from RH.

B.  Manage to get the patch from this project to build into the RH
supplied kernel you are still not running a RH supplied kernel and
you're not entitled to support from RH.

So, one way or another, you'll void your support with RH.

Thus, you need to make a decision for yourself.  Is LIDS what you
want/need or is support from RH what you want/need.  If it is LIDS that
you want/need will probably want to take route A since that is what
their project is telling you is the way to go.  Chances are they won't
help you with B and folks here will may not help you with either.  :-)
