Problems with using text based ftp from behind a proxy serveron RedHat ES 4

Hi,
I have tried setting the proxy variable as you suggest and it still does not work. I am using ftp-0.17-22. 
Does anyone else have any other ideas?

Which ftp klient are you using? Try to set the http_proxy variable
