apache+mod_so

I have a rhel4 machine running apache2.  This machine is a production machine.  Looking through the modules directory, and httpd.conf - mod_so does not seem to exist as an available module.  We need to compile in mod_so for dso support.  I just wanted to check with the list first as to the best way to to accomplish this.  Any links or info appreciated.
