Failure to boot with SMP kernel on x86_64 SMP system ...

I had a similar issue.  There was a kernel issue with the LSI raid controller, where it would hang on boot.  It would literally hang 4-7 times,  I would have to hard reset it via the LOM, and finally it would just boot.  I am running 2.6.9-42.0.3.ELsmp.  When I upgraded the kernel it quit.
