listing a huge amount of file on one file system

"One of our servers that is running on RHEL 4, has a directory that
contains over 2 millions files in it and growing"

Silly question:

If the directory has over 2,000,000 files in it, why would you want to
do an ls -l?  Is there something more specific that you are trying to
accomplish with a file listing?
