q:kernel update gnome panel disappearance

Dear all,
Maybe our institutional redhat subscription does not allow us to ask support
questions (i cannot find the link on the RH website), therefore a post to
this mail-list. Since updating yesterday RH WS4 to the new kernel my gnome
panels disappeared and upon booting it complains that a panel is already
running. Anyone a brilliant idea how to solve this problem?!
