Hi Mark,

They are actually ported for use in the x86_64 platform in order to give
functionality to a 32 bit package.

For example: we use HP's Server Management Homepage and one package is
still in 32 bit. I have to install zlib i386 and several others to get it
to function.

In the CentOS base repositories, under the x86_64, I see a *lot* of 386
rpms that are the same package and release as the x86_64s. Note that I'm
talking about dups; for example,
zlib-1.2.3-3.i386.rpm
zlib-1.2.3-3.x86_64.rpm

Why are they there?
