I've answered my own question. Use the --arch=[i386|x86_64] option of
up2date and drop the version number.
[root at viola ~]# up2date --arch=i386 --install openmotif
Fetching Obsoletes list for channel: rhel-x86_64-as-4...
Fetching rpm headers...
########################################
Name Version Rel
----------------------------------------------------------
openmotif 2.2.3 10.2.el4
i386
Thanks,
Stan
