thanks for the reply - i did what you suggested but the boot failed with
a kernel panic and this was on the console

Creating root device
mkrootdev: label / not found
Mounting root filesystem
mount: error 2 mounting ext3

any ideas??

Are you copying to an existing working system?  Either you don't have the
drivers for this machine's disk controller or the filesystem doesn't have a
label.
