[rhn-users] 32bit vs 64bit

Guys and Gals,

Merry xmas!

Maybe someone can advise me...

We've purchased a Dell server (1cpu) intending to migrate a development 
environment from a 32-bit environment (desktop PC) Linux to a 
server-class machine.

We've bought RedHat Linux 3 ES, EM64T, FI, but when I try to install 
some of our development packages (eg picotool) rpm complains about 
missing libraries. OS was all pre-installed by Dell.

Everything I've read-up on, on rhn, says that the 64-bit version should 
be backward compatible to 32-bit. But I can't see why it's complaining.

Our developers have been talking to Pico, who recommend we only run a 
32-bit environment - but this doesn't sound right to me..  If I went 
down the route of a re-install, where would I get hold of the 32-bit of 
ES ?  (would it be built into the original CDs shipped?)

Another idea we've had was to purchase VMWare, and run multiple 32-bit 
"development servers" off of the 64-bit host.  But If I go that route, 
then the following additional questions arise:

1) - Would our current license cover us for multiple copies of ES? 
(32bit + host 64?)
2) - What sort of spec machine is practical?  I imagine I'd need to move 
to 2CPU, and more than 256Mb of memory.
