1.) First of all verify that you have the latest firmware
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/DRVR-MATRIX.html
you can find drivers and firmware to ALL IBM systems here
2.) If you are getting strange characters I would check my BIOS to verify
that the NumLk is off on boot.
are you using a USB keyboard or PS2?
3.) I have seen similar shutdown results
does this machine use an RSA?
Try
sudo /sbin/shutdown -r
init 6

Hello,
I've got an IBM eServer series x330 server that upon which I'm installing
RHEL 4 Update 1. First off, when the installation asks to check the
install media, the checks always fail. When I do the check on a different
system I get straight passes. RHEL 3 had no problem.
Second, usually when I boot the system (from CD or hard drive) I have to
unplug the keyboard and plug it back in a few times to get any keyboard
input working. I just tried logging into the installed OS and the
keyboard input was either in all caps (without CAPS LOCK on) or resulted
in "2", "'", and "~" characters, among others. Sometimes rebooting helps.
Finally, the system refuses to reboot. When I tell it to reboot it goes
through a normal shutdown sequence and the screen goes black but it never
actually restarts. I'm forced to hold down the power button to get it to
shut off.
Has anyone experienced something like this? It's very odd and I'm at a
loss of where to start. I've looked in the BIOS and AFAIK there isn't
anything wrong.
I'm also pretty sure I didn't tell it to install X, though it boots into
it by default now. That could be negligence on my part, though.
Thanks very much for any input.
Justin
