One solution to speed up downloads is to do it for one system only.
And mark in up2date-config
not to delete the binary packages.
 Export the download directory, mount it on all other redhat systems
and configure those systems
to use the mounted directory.
Now the up2date will only download the header files and not the rpm
files again.

I have setup on the master machine a cron job at 4:00 with
    /usr/sbin/up2date-nox --update --install
and whenever I start 'up2date' interactive the files are already present.
