I re-installed the system without the Firewall or SELinux options and
Active FTP now works.

Thanks for your help Liz.

I missed that, my bad.

Ok, without knowing your network is there any chance that the linux
server has different rules to the windows one, such as, you used IE on
windows and ftp:// blah and it used a proxy, or, that it has a different
set of firewalls it passes through or just different firwall
rules/access lists.

Can you access other ftp sites? Such as ftp.microsoft.com and download
something? And be sure its not an ftp out issue for your server rather
than a problem for them? I believe you can point cpan at a different
server, Ive not had to play with that, but I had issues with a box
similarly and downloaded and manually applied the cpan files when I had
problems a while back, I think my problem was my box didn't have
internet access. There are a number of cpan servers.. So. When you
configured CPAN you picked an FTP server, Im not sure how you would
reaccess that list and pick a new one, but if ftp in general works, use
a different cpan ftp server.

As you can see from the FTP output, I've tried Active and Passive FTP -
neither connects the data channel. Something inside RH is blocking the
data channel - Iptables doesn't seem to be configured to block, but I'm
no expert.

I guess it's not something that's been seen before...

Thanks

Neil

try passive ftp

connect, login, type passive.

Failing that, you possibly have a firewall between you and it, and ftp
data is a different port to ftp commands. eg data is 20, commands 21,
and if using passive its a randomish port I believe (could be wrong)
over 1024

Hi all.

I've installed RH Ent4, all the patches from up2date, MySQL and Apache.

I'm now trying (and failing) to add perl modules with CPAN. Below is a
sample:-

8<----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------
[root at bugzilla1 5.8.5]# perl -MCPAN -e 'install"AppConfig"'
CPAN: Storable loaded ok
Going to read /root/InstallPackages/y/Metadata
Warning: Found only 0 objects in /root/InstallPackages/y/Metadata Going
to read /root/InstallPackages/y/sources/authors/01mailrc.txt.gz
Going to read
/root/InstallPackages/y/sources/modules/02packages.details.txt.gz
  Database was generated on Tue, 24 Jan 2006 02:16:00 GMT
CPAN: HTTP::Date loaded ok

  There's a new CPAN.pm version (v1.83) available!
  [Current version is v1.7601]
  You might want to try
    install Bundle::CPAN
    reload cpan
  without quitting the current session. It should be a seamless upgrade
  while we are running...

CPAN: LWP::UserAgent loaded ok
Fetching with LWP:
  ftp://cpan.etla.org/pub/CPAN/modules/03modlist.data.gz
LWP failed with code[404] message[File '03modlist.data.gz' not found]
Fetching with Net::FTP:
  ftp://cpan.etla.org/pub/CPAN/modules/03modlist.data.gz
Couldn't fetch 03modlist.data.gz from cpan.etla.org
8<----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------------

Then it halts. If I just try command line FTP that fails too.:-

and we have lot of Linux-, UNIX-, and TeX-related stuff here. Look at
the /pub/ROADMAP (or /pub/ROADMAP.html) for details. The file
/pub/README.uploads states the rules for uploading data to this server.
 The server is avaliable via rsync and HTTP protocols. Use the following
URLs:
 rsync://ftp.fi.muni.cz/pub and http://ftp.fi.muni.cz/pub/.
 The server is available via FTP over IPv6 at ftp://ftp6.linux.cz/ as
well.
 Look at http://www.linux.cz/stats/ for the hardware configuration and
statistics of this server.

If I try the same on WindowsXP it all works perfectly.

Can anyone tell me what I've done wrong?

Help most appreciated

Neil
