RE: X server fails to come up

I've had the exact problem. Not sure what causes it, but if you check
/var/log/messages, you'll find something like this:

Aug 23 17:22:26 admin1 xfs: ignoring font path element
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled (unreadable)
Aug 23 17:22:26 admin1 xfs: ignoring font path element
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc (unreadable)
Aug 23 17:22:26 admin1 xfs: ignoring font path element
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 (unreadable)
A

What I've done to 'fix' it was go to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc and chmod
644 fonts.dir. Then do:

service xfs stop
service xfs start (I don't trust restart).

This has worked for me. YMMV.

Checked that, xfs is running (if you stop it and try X again the server
complains about not being able to connect to it.) Is anybody else running
an
old graphics card not supported by XFree86 4?
