%doc and -n fullpath

Suppose I have

%setup -c -n /a/b

(so I specify a full name for the top build dir). Where should I put
doc files so that %doc finds them.

To test, I tried

$ echo a > a.README
$ tar zcvf a-1.tar.gz a.README
a.README

and created

### begin a-1.spec

Summary: a
Name: a
Version: 1
Release: 1
License: GPL
Group: Utilities/System
Buildroot: %{_tmppath}/%name-%version
Source: %name-%version.tar.gz

%description
a

%prep
%setup -c -n $RPM_BUILD_ROOT

%file
%doc a.README

### end a-1.spec

and I get the puzzling

$ rpmbuild -bb a-1.spec
Executing(%prep): /bin/sh -e /home/mw/rpmbuild/tmp/rpm-tmp.82851
+ umask 022
+ cd /home/mw/rpmbuild/BUILD
+ cd /home/mw/rpmbuild/BUILD
+ rm -rf /home/mw/rpmbuild/tmp/a-1-root
+ /bin/mkdir -p /home/mw/rpmbuild/tmp/a-1-root
+ cd /home/mw/rpmbuild/tmp/a-1-root
+ /usr/bin/gzip -dc /home/mw/rpmbuild/a-1/a-1.tar.gz
+ tar -xvvf -
-rw-r--r-- mw/mw             2 2003-01-11 16:49:11 a.README
+ STATUS=0
+ '[' 0 -ne 0 ']'
++ /usr/bin/id -u
+ '[' 500 = 0 ']'
++ /usr/bin/id -u
+ '[' 500 = 0 ']'
+ /bin/chmod -Rf a+rX,g-w,o-w .
+ %file
/home/mw/rpmbuild/tmp/rpm-tmp.82851: line 35: fg: no job control
error: Bad exit status from /home/mw/rpmbuild/tmp/rpm-tmp.82851 (%prep)

RPM build errors:
    Bad exit status from /home/mw/rpmbuild/tmp/rpm-tmp.82851 (%prep)

What does this mean?

I have

$ rpm -q rpm rpm-build
rpm-4.2-0.25.1
rpm-build-4.2-0.25.1

Thx,

Mate
