[*] RPM's logic is actually more complicated than merely:

      gzip -dc "%{SOURCE0}" | tar -xvf -

    In particular, RPM is capable of automatically detecting whether to
    use gzip, bzip2, or nothing (i.e., plain tar) to unpack the source
    archive.
