RPM problems

Problem w/ rpm
I've got a problem with rpm that makes no sense to me. Th...
originally RH6.1, but I have installed and upgraded MANY M...
the way.
I need a newer version of perl, so I can install spamassas...

perl-5.6.0-10a.src.rpm from the RH7.1 SRPMS and tried this:

[root]# rpm -Uvh perl-5.6.0-10a.src.rpm
only packages with major numbers <= 3 are supported by this version of RPM
error: perl-5.6.0-10a.src.rpm cannot be installed

I've already upgraded rpm (or so I thought), so I checked like this:

[root]# rpm -qa | grep rpm
  .
  . irrelevant entries snipped
  .
rpmdb-redhat-6.1-0.19990924
rpm-4.0.4-6x
rpm-devel-4.0.4-6x

So, I have rpm-4.0.4-6x installed. What's wrong? Is it related to the
rpmdb-redhat-6.1-0.19990924 item above? If so, what do I do to fix this?

After being baffled by the above, I did the following:
[root]# rpm --version
RPM version 3.0.3

So why do I have rpm 3.0.3, yet my rpm query shows 4.0.4, and more importantly
how do I get the new perl installed properly?

Next I thought instead of waiting for a reply, I'll just install rpm-4.0.4
all over again, so I did:
rpm -Uvh rpm-4.0.4-7x.18.src.rpm
cd /usr/src/redhat/SPECS
rpm -ba rpm.spec
