Space availability check by rpm

Hello All,

Wanted to know how exactly rpm checks availability of disk space before
installation.

For example, if /xxx/yyy/filezzz is in the %files list of an rpm package
(say its the only file in the package) and the file system of /xxx/yyy has
space just enough to accommodate filezzz.
Trying to install the package using rpm -i displays message "installing
package needs ...Kb on the .... file system".
However, rpm2cpio x.rpm | cpio -iv ./xxx/yyy/filezzz extracts the file
without any error.
Though this behaviour can cause some concern only in conditions of extreme
scarcity of disk space, I was just curious to know how exactly rpm checks
the availability of disk space for installation.

Regards,
Bharavi.
