Are you sure that Oracle is up and running before you try to access  
the box?  Oracle (which is a ridiculous PIG) seems to take a while to  
get running on my machine.  If it's not fully up, I get 500 errors as  
well.  A status check *should* look something like this :

[friz at example ~]$ sudo /sbin/service oracle-xe status
