Ok, here's another clue that I hadn't seen before: I'd forgotten the /var/log/rhn directory. In the rhn_taskomatic_log, I found an error:

INFO | jvm 1 | 2009/02/05 08:54:02 | 2009-02-05 08:54:02,309 [DefaultQuartzScheduler_Worker-9] ERROR com.redhat.rhn.manager.kickstart.cobbler.CobblerLoginCommand - XmlRpcFault while logging in. most likely user doesn't have permissions.
INFO | jvm 1 | 2009/02/05 08:54:02 | redstone.xmlrpc.XmlRpcFault: xmlrpclib.ProtocolError:<ProtocolError for <system name elided>/rpc/api: 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable>

And this looks like it's further up the food chain than the $pxt->user uninitialized. Anyone with a clue as to how I fix this? I *suspect* that solving this will solve my problem.

      mark
