Well, who would have thought to search the tuxracer list. For that 
matter, who would have thought there _was_ a tuxracer list? ;)

The problem is easily cured by changing a setting in:
$HOME/.tuxracer/options

Find:
set use_sphere_display_list true

Change it to:
set use_sphere_display_list false

Problem solved, tux is rendered properly on the display.
It appears there is a small performance hit with this setting, though I 
don't see it here.
