Next week, tens of thousands of people, from dozens of countries, will gather at Futurecom 2017 in São Paulo, Brazil, for what’s been billed as the largest and most qualified information and communications technology (ICT) event in Latin America. Red Hat will be there – as a sponsor, with a booth, and as speakers. The show will run Oct. 2-5 at the Transamerica Expo Center and will cover everything from digital transformation and IoT to artificial intelligence and customer experience.

As telecommunications companies continue to modernize their networks and IT systems, they have to navigate the challenges that come with legacy systems, including legacy virtualized network functions (VNFs) that rely on local filesystem storage, single server implementations on which all the services run, and manually-intensive installations and upgrades. What telcos need are tools like Ansible, a general-purpose, open-source automation engine that automates software provisioning, configuration management, and application deployment.

Virtualizing service provider workloads calls for a thorough and thoughtful plan that taps into the full ecosystem, from infrastructure orchestration to the application itself. At OpenStack Summit this past May, Julio Villarreal-Pelegrino, principal architect with Red Hat’s cloud practice, and Stephane Lefrere, head of the cloud infrastructure practice at Red Hat, shared an approach for creating a successful NFV architecture, with a focus on the platform features and tools that support service assurance, performance, manageability and operability.

AnsibleFest kicks off this week in San Francisco, and the day-long conference will bring together hundreds of Ansible users, developers and industry partners. We at Red Hat will be there in force, taking the opportunity to talk about how Ansible – a simple, agentless IT automation technology – can help organizations navigate their increasingly complex environments of sprawling systems that create management, availability, and cost challenges.

Why do telcos and OpenStack go so well together? What opportunities can telcos realize through an OpenStack implementation? And how does NFV, cloud and 5G fit into the telco business model? Red Hat’s vice president of telecommunications, Darrell Jordan-Smith, joined Stu Miniman, senior analyst at Wikibon and John Troyer, chief reckoner at TechReckoning, in “The Cube” at OpenStack Summit this past May to talk telco and OpenStack.

Where do we stand with OpenStack today, and what’s on the horizon? Red Hat’s Radhesh Balakrishnan, general manager for OpenStack, joined SiliconANGLE in “The Cube” at Red Hat Summit 2017 to outline steps for implementing OpenStack and what the future holds.

Network functions virtualization (NFV) deployments continue to grow in the telco sector. Top service providers from all over the world are moving to virtualize 60 to 80 percent of their networking functions in the next three to five years, including AT&T, China Telecom and Vodafone Germany, according to research from Light Reading. If you’re ready to get going on your NFV deployment, we have seven “must have” tips for an effective telco NFV deployment to help you get started, which Red Hat and Juniper Networks shared at the OpenStack Summit last month.

If you are a telecommunications provider, you are already using cloud technologies and most likely looking closely at network functions virtualization (NFV). So, you probably know that the move to cloud and NFV infrastructure can complicate the delivery of high-availability services. At the recent OPNFV Summit in Beijing, Red Hat’s Aaron Smith and Pasi Vaananen took the stage to share a proof-of-concept (POC) project that gets right to the heart of the challenge. Turns out, delivering high availability services can be done.

In mid-June, we’ll be joining thousands in China for The Linux Foundation’s OPNFV Summit to talk all things Network Functions Virtualization (NFV), in particular to accelerate the evolution of open source NFV and an integrated, open reference platform built by industry leaders and innovators. We at Red Hat believe that using this open reference platform will accelerate the NFV evolution. We hope you can join us at the JW Marriott in Beijing, China June 12-15.

Plenty of telcos have either already committed to, or are actively investigating, network functions virtualization (NFV) running on OpenStack platform to help them increase network agility and mitigate costs. We at Red Hat firmly believe NFV + OpenStack is the infrastructure of modern telecommunications.
