In an industry undergoing constant change, Red Hat’s annual community and social responsibility report is an opportunity for reflection. This is particularly true of our 2021 report, which offers a view into how throughout the pandemic (and beyond), we found new ways of collaborating and contributing to the communities around us.

Rather than focusing on the technology and what Red Hat accomplished for customers and partners, this report looks at how Red Hat gave back, took care of associates, invested in our environmental sustainability programs, and built a better world by acting with integrity and in the best interest of stakeholders. We’re proud that in 2021:

  • Red Hat’s energy intensity, the average amount of energy (kWh) used per full-time associate, decreased by 34% from 2019.

  • We achieved a milestone in 2021 by closing the 1.8% global gender-pay equity gap

  • Red Hatters contributed more than 4,000 hours to open source science and education projects through our skills-based volunteering pilot, Red Hat Impact.

  • We donated more than $4.2 million to charitable and educational causes worldwide.

  • More than 21,000 students learned fundamental skills in Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat OpenShift through Red Hat Academy, which we offered at no cost to more than 2,400 accredited, non-profit, and degree-granting institutions across 70 countries.

In other ways, this report also shows how the open source way continues to define what the future of work at Red Hat looks like. For example:

  • Nearly 100 senior leaders committed to a 10-month Inclusion Catalyst Experience in 2021, to examine and build mindsets that foster inclusive behavior and positive change throughout Red Hat.

  • We provided additional support in 2021 for Red Hatters based on associate feedback, including quarterly Recharge Days, a home office allowance, additional flexibility to use time away from work, and the ability to select their work profile -office assigned, remote or office-flex.

  • We experienced a 34% increase in Red Hatters who took e-learning courses, and a 38% increase in those who took virtual, instructor-led courses through our Red Hat University training learning platform.
