Red Hat’s flagship open source operating platform Red Hat Enterprise Linux has been recognized by recent industry awards for a variety of attributes, including its integrated virtualization technology, energy efficiency and Linux leadership.
In February, the decades-running Datamation 2009 Product of the Year Awards recognized Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the Product of the Year in the “Enterprise Linux” category. Nominations were submitted in a variety of category areas, and Datamation readers, “a diverse group of IT professionals with firsthand knowledge of these products, most of whom use these products everyday on the job,” then voted online for their favorite picks.
According to the article,
Red Hat clearly holds top dog status in the enterprise Linux category, as this vote reflects. Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 handily bested finalists Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10 and Ubuntu Server Edition.
This marks the second consecutive year that Red Hat Enterprise Linux has ranked at the top in Datamation’s product awards – last year, it grabbed the top spot in the same “Enterprise Linux” category, also beating out Novell and Ubuntu. Datamation readers have spoken. Twice.
The Red Hat Enterprise Linux writeup in this year’s awards article also noted the latest virtualization features included in the open source platform,
As a sign of the times, note that Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.2 offers improved virtualization support for larger system configurations. This virtualization push will become increasingly important in the years ahead, and should give Red Hat’s Linux product some muscle against competitive virtualization solutions from VMware and Microsoft.
And, while we’re talking about virtualization, check out some other recent awards that Red Hat Enterprise Linux, and other Red Hat solutions, won at the SYS-CON Virtualization Conference & Expo Show Awards in January:
- Best Overall Virtualization Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform
- Best Server Virtualization Solution: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Platform
- Best VDI: Solid ICE
- Best Greener IT Product: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
Just recently in February 2009, Red Hat announced its virtualization strategy and roadmap for 2009, outlining plans to deliver a complete set of virtualization solutions based on Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM). You can watch our webcast on the news too.
Just prior to that, we announced agreements with Microsoft to advance server virtualization interoperability with reciprocal certifications for our virtualization platforms. We webcasted the news with Microsoft, and the broadcast is available for replay here.
