The Red Hat Shares newsletter helps IT leaders navigate the complicated world of IT―the open source way.

FROM THE EDITOR

A look back at 2022―the good, the inspiring, and the weird―and a chance to help shape the future

2022 marked the third year of the COVID-19 pandemic. While some tech companies beckoned employees back to their offices, Red Hat is embracing flexibility (in a conference room or stretchy pants).

As for events, we straddled both worlds, organizing our first hybrid Red Hat Summit in May. The event continued through the year with 21 smaller Red Hat Summit: Connect events across the globe. And in October, we hosted a fun and successful AnsibleFest in Chicago.

This year, Red Hat got a new CEO and a new chief diversity, equity and inclusion officer. We also celebrated our 29th birthday, 10 years of Red Hat OpenShift and the 20th anniversary of Red Hat Enterprise Linux―then promptly released version 9 of our flagship product.

We launched a new original podcast called Code Comments (you should definitely check it out). And not to brag, but we were named to Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list for the fourth year in a row and won a few awards we’re pretty proud of.

In the mood for feel-good stories from 2022? Some of our favorites include Red Hatters helping Red Hatters affected by the war in Ukraine, a teenage girl’s mission to diversify coding and Red Hat working with Historically Black Colleges and Universities to expose more students to open source.

In other notable (and some flat-out weird) news stories from 2022:

The global population hit 8 billion. NASA took breathtaking new images of outer space. Scientists grew human brain cells in rat brains. Climate activists threw food at art. Airport security found a cat named “Smells” in a suitcase―and a dog in a backpack. Someone bought Steve Jobs’ 1970s sandals for US$218,750 (talk about smells …). And the upheaval at Twitter might be an opportunity for Mastodon, an open source social network.

All this to say, it's been another eventful year. In this end-of-year issue, check out the top 10 Red Hat Shares stories from 2022, Red Hat’s 2023 Global Tech Outlook, how to contribute to the future of automation in Project Wisdom and more.

Help shape the future of automation with Project Wisdom

Red Hat and IBM are training an artificial intelligence (AI) model to infuse Ansible with new capabilities. But first, our AI needs to be fine-tuned on real-world use cases, so we’re seeking testers to try it out—and maybe even break something.
