COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

Open unlocks the world's potential

Jump to section

Looking back at the past year, most of us will remember uncertainty and change brought on by events like the pandemic and the fight for racial equity. Through our collaborative open culture, Red Hatters worked together to support nonprofit organizations that were working to solve these issues, as well as support the local communities where we live and work. See how in our annual report.

* We changed from a fiscal year (FY) to a calendar year (CY) in 2020.

CORPORATE CITIZENSHIP

Strengthening the communities where we live and work

Our corporate citizenship efforts include donations to nonprofit organizations, gift matching, and global volunteer programs. We primarily focus our efforts in areas Red Hatters care about the most, including organizations that provide for basic human needs, STEM education in primary/secondary schools, higher education, and health.

We donated more than US$4.5 million to charitable and educational causes, more than double the previous reported year.

We matched more than US$875,000 in Red Hatter donations to 2,000+ charities in 2020.

Through our Team-19 and Social Innovation programs, Red Hatters donated 5,000+ hours to external open source projects dedicated to overcoming the challenges of COVID-19.

PEOPLE AND CULTURE

Fostering innovation through an open organization

At Red Hat, we have a unique culture rooted in open source principles. We’re leaders in a movement larger than ourselves. We work to defend software freedom, connect people and ideas, and show the world the power of the open source way. We’ve all heard the common refrain “we’re in this together,” but the things Red Hatters have accomplished over the past year show how powerful "together" can really be.

We enhanced parental leave, adoption, surrogacy, and disability benefits to expand family support for all associates.

550+ students interned at Red Hat worldwide in 2020.

We launched several new diversity and inclusion training opportunities for associates.

ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY

Reducing environmental impact through sustainable practices

With initiatives and associate engagement focused on reducing waste and power usage, recycling, and composting, we continue to think creatively to find new ways of bringing business and environmental responsibility together—whether working from home or in an office.

Red Hatters offered tips and ideas for being more environmentally responsible through a company-wide sustainability-at-home shared resource.

Power consumption declined by an average of 23% last year in directly managed offices across the globe.

Red Hatters created an internal community to support developing and implementing sustainability targets across the business.

CHAMPIONS OF SOFTWARE FREEDOM

Defending the open source ecosystem

We’ve spent more than two decades collaborating on community projects—including protecting open source licenses—so we can continue to develop software that pushes the boundaries of technological ability.

We helped expand the number of companies that have signed on to the GPL Cooperation Commitment.

In 2020, we launched a conscious language project to remove problematic language from our code, documentation, websites, and open source projects.

We defended computer interfaces as unable to be copyrighted in a 2020 amicus brief to the U.S. Supreme Court.
