Birdstep Technology AS, an international vendor and developer of Ultra Small Footprint database technology (DBMS), has signed a Developer Partner Agreement with Red Hat® Inc. (NASDAQ: RHAT) to port its patented data management software to Red Hat Linux 6.1.
The agreement positions Birdstep to target the fast growing market of mobile devices including the new services for cellular phones that utilize Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). A recent report from Cahners In-Stat Group estimates that by the year 2002, medium and large firms will spend more than $117 billion on wireless equipment and services, double the $54 billion spent in 1998.
Birdstep™ Database technology (DBMS) combined with its native XML support, enables companies to build and maintain mobile solutions that seamlessly manage the flow of information between servers and handheld devices. Birdstep™ Small Footprint database technology (DBMS) on Linux will significantly increase storage capacity and search efficiency and at the same time lower the need for CPU and processing capacity an essential requirement for mobile handheld devices.
Birdstep's™ DBMS storage and retrieval mechanism supports arbitrary data structures and allows companies to effectively manipulate information represented as simple bytes, relational tables, BLOBs, complex objects, XML-structures, applets and animations.
"Our incentive to move toward Red Hat Linux is fueled by recent surveys that show 29 percent of all public Web servers run on Linux, making it the most popular operating system for public Web sites," said Henning Klemp, CEO of Birdstep Technology. "In addition, there is a growing acceptance of Linux within the handheld and notebook-style information appliance area. These two realities put us in a great position because our technology can deliver the same functionality for both sides of the value chain - server and handheld."
Birdstep Technology will soon be providing Red Hat Linux users with a free download version of Birdstep™ DBMS available through the Birdstep Technology Web site www.birdstep.com.
