We are excited to share that Ansible Container was selected by Black Duck Software as the 2016 Open Source Rookie of the Year for containers, awarded each year to the most exciting and impactful new open source projects. As Linux containers continue to be a key initiative for next-generation enterprise IT, we are pleased to have the Ansible community’s efforts around automating container build and deployment processes recognized by Black Duck.

Launched in June 2016 as part of the Ansible project, Ansible Container is a community-driven, open source technology that allows developers and IT operations teams to re-use existing Ansible Roles in order to facilitate the creation, delivery and management of containerized workloads, all as part of an existing integrated workstream. Since Ansible is at the heart of Ansible Container, users can make container build processes more predictable and repeatable, creating a pathway towards holistic enterprise container management. As users automate their existing infrastructure and networks with Ansible playbooks, they can reuse additional playbooks to containerize their applications and deploy them on a container application platform like the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, which provides enterprise-grade orchestration and management powered by Kubernetes and Red Hat Enterprise Linux.

Red Hat’s container portfolio is built entirely from upstream, community-driven projects (including Ansible, docker and Kubernetes) and provides innovative features to drive enterprise IT forward while still allowing for the retention of mission-critical traditional systems and workloads. Ansible Container is still a young project, and not currently delivered as part of Ansible, but one that is moving very quickly, and we look forward to working with the community to continue to improve this much-needed capability.

We’d like to congratulate the Ansible Container team and all of the contributors on their hard work in creating a technology that aims to make it easier to bring containers into production workstreams!
