Earlier today, we announced the winners of the 2020 Red Hat Innovation Awards; however, that’s just part of the story. Now in its 14th year, the Red Hat Innovation Awards are designed to recognize the technological achievements of Red Hat customers around the world. Creative thinking, determined problem-solving and transformative uses of Red Hat technology are evident not just in our winners but throughout the entire pool of award nominees.

We’re excited to recognize an additional group of Red Hat customers using open source technology to make waves in their respective industries. Let’s take a closer look at this year’s honorable mentions - Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad, ExxonMobil, Tata Consultancy Services, Telefonica Movistar Argentina and Turkcell.

Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad

Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad and its subsidiaries, Alliance Investment Bank Berhad and Alliance Islamic Bank Berhad, are a dynamic, integrated financial services group offering banking and financial solutions through its consumer banking, SME banking, corporate and commercial banking, Islamic banking, investment banking and stockbroking businesses. The Malaysian bank provides easy access to its broad base of customers throughout the country via multi-pronged delivery channels which include retail, business, investment banking, and privilege banking branches, as well as mobile and internet banking.

The bank has adopted a differentiated customer engagement approach called the Alliance Way, using an empathetic approach to understand and act on the needs of its customers, and digital technologies to improve customer experience. This has resulted in the bank delivering new solutions that are fast, simple and responsive. One such innovation is the recent branch-in-a-tablet solution, a digital account opening tool for consumer deposits, personal loan and business current accounts aimed at improving customer experience with speed, convenience, and efficiency. To build the platform, Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad worked with Red Hat Consulting to deploy a solution based on several Red Hat technologies including Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), and Red Hat AMQ. Since launch, Alliance Bank has seen faster time to market, reducing its project delivery from 6-18 months to 2-6 months.

ExxonMobil

ExxonMobil is one of the world’s largest publicly traded energy providers and chemical manufacturers. The company develops and applies next-generation technologies to help safely and responsibly meet the world’s growing needs for energy and high-quality chemical products.

Its data scientists needed a better and quicker way to share data science solutions with customers. To meet this need, ExxonMobil deployed Red Hat OpenShift, enabling its data scientists to develop and share a higher number of projects per year. In addition to using OpenShift to democratize data science, the company is teaching its employees modern software development practices like CI/CD pipelines to help them innovate faster. In collaboration with Red Hat Consulting, it has gone through a culture transformation changing how ExxonMobil’s scientists work together. ExxonMobil can now iterate more quickly, accelerating time to delivery on successful projects, and share proof of concepts faster.

Tata Consultancy Services

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is an IT services, consulting and business solutions organization that offers a consulting-led, cognitive-powered, integrated portfolio of business, technology and engineering services and solutions. Being adaptable to the dynamic environment needs highly agile capability. TCS set its vision to become enterprise agile by 2020. This means driving holistic transformation to have an agile process, skills and workplace supported by cutting edge technology and infrastructure.

Adopting RHEL and Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application Platform (JBoss EAP)  have enabled TCS’s cloud-first strategy while accelerating its delivery capabilities and speeding release cycle time from days to hours. The transformation enabled TCS to lower the cost of ownership, reduce vendor lock-in and significantly increase compute power.

Telefónica Movistar Argentina

Telefónica Movistar Argentina is part of Telefónica, one of the largest telephone operators in the world by market capitalization and number of customers, operates in three continents and provides services in 25 countries. It sought to provide B2B clients with self-management capabilities by means of a streamlined open source interface combining their heterogeneous technologies and tools. From the beginning, the managed cloud project focused on facilitating the co-existence of legacy and native on-premise services while reaping the benefits of sharing part of the infrastructure. Telefonica deployed a solution based on RHEL, Red Hat OpenShift, Red Hat Identity Management in collaboration with Red Hat Consulting and Red Hat Training. Applications can now be deployed in a matter of minutes and be connected to a traditional on-premises infrastructure to exchange data. It also offers the ability to import virtual machines from other datacenters. Telefonica can now deliver better user experiences through faster, coordinated and more reliable deployments.

Turkcell

Turkcell is a converged telecommunication and technology services provider, founded and headquartered in Turkey. It serves its customers with voice, data, TV and value-added consumer and enterprise services on mobile and fixed networks. The company desired to become known as a digital operator, expanding its digital service offerings, such as bip (an IP-based instant messaging and marketplace service) and lifebox (personal cloud storage). To do this, it needed to launch these new services and offerings through new digital channels, all while cutting costs and preparing itself for future 5G investments. Two years ago, it began to move away from its legacy cloud platform, which was burdened by high costs and inflexible update timeframes, to a more agile, scalable, cost-efficient platform based on open source software that could also support its move to 5G. Ultimately, Turkcell selected Red Hat OpenStack Platform and Red Hat Ceph Storage as the cornerstones of its unified telco cloud (UTC), and collaborated with a team comprised of Red Hat Consulting, Red Hat Technical Account Manager and Red Hat Training. Turkcell decreased its total cost of ownership, helping boost ecosystem innovation, achieved a full return on investment for the new platform in one year and can now reach more customers at greater speed.
