Part 1: Open, Software-Defined Storage

by Steve Bohac, Red Hat Storage Product Marketing

Hopefully, by now you have seen the below graphic before. Two weeks ago, we posted the blog “Open Software Defined Storage – Don’t Get Fooled By The False ‘Open’ and Get Locked-In Again”.

Additionally, Gartner recently placed ‘Software Defined Anything’ in it’s list for Top IT Trends for 2014. With this proclamation, as well as recent discussions in the storage market about software-defined storage, we wanted to spend some time to discuss the graphic shown in that blog and what Red Hat’s approach is to this important and growing market trend and why a truly open approach will ultimately win the day. Today’s entry will begin a four part mini-series.

True to Red Hat’s community-powered philosophy, Red Hat Storage Server offers a software-defined solution that is truly open source. By harnessing the power of community-driven innovation, Red Hat Storage Server genuinely benefits from multiple sources of knowledge, effort, inspiration and creativity. The result is a better product for the enterprise. Businesses can break free of vendor lock-in through Red Hat’s subscription model that adds value and offers flexibility.

As the savings section of the graphic below shows, software-defined storage can generate substantial savings. Given that Red Hat Storage Server is open source based and operates on industry standard x86 hardware, it has been found to save up to 52% of storage system costs, and 20% of operational costs (IDC)*. Read the full report.

Next time we will look more in-depth at our community approach harnessing the Gluster.org open source community development.
