Simplicity, consistency, and performance with Dell Technologies

Red Hat® Data Services is a portfolio of solutions that includes Red Hat OpenShift® Data Foundation, a persistent software-defined storage and data services solution based on Ceph®, Rook, and Noobaa technologies.

Running as a Kubernetes service, OpenShift Data Foundation is engineered, tested, and qualified to provide data services for Red Hat OpenShift. OpenShift Data Foundation simplifies and automates the deployment of storage for cloud-native containers and can be deployed within an OpenShift Container Platform cluster on existing worker nodes, infrastructure nodes, or dedicated nodes. Alternatively, OpenShift Data Foundation can be decoupled from the Red Hat OpenShift cluster and  managed as a separate, independently scalable data store, delivering data for one or many Red Hat OpenShift clusters.

OpenShift Data Foundation external mode storage clusters are massively scalable, support mixed media types, and expand tuning options for diverse workloads. Decoupled storage clusters can be scaled as needs dictate. Multiple Red Hat OpenShift clusters can access storage from an external cluster, easing data sharing between Red Hat OpenShift clusters and applications. This flexibility also allows individual data nodes to be customized and optimized for specific workloads using the most appropriate Intel technology.

Configurations optimized for workloads

Red Hat, Intel, and Dell Technologies have jointly developed three workload-optimized configurations for Red Hat OpenShift Data Foundation external data nodes. Delivered with Dell EMC PowerEdge R740xd servers, these solutions combine innovative software and hardware technologies to deliver workload-optimized data services using an external data node featuring Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors and Intel® Optane™ SSDs

The Intel Optane non-volatile memory express (NVMe) SSD drives serve as a cache tier in front of the capacity tier, speeding access to hot data and taking the write pressure off the capacity drives. This solution is optimized for both I/O operations per second (IOPS) and total cost, bringing lower latency, higher IOPS, and greater endurance. OpenShift Data Foundation data node configurations can help you accelerate time to value by taking the guesswork out of your architectural design. They offer a combination of simplicity and flexibility, and streamline the process of going cloud-native using containers.

Edge configuration:Edge servers process Internet of Things (IoT)-related information at the edge to alleviate the bottlenecks caused by sending huge amounts of data back to core datacenter servers for processing. Edge servers require smaller footprints and lower power consumption, but still need to process demanding streaming, analytics, and database workloads with low latency and high throughput.

  • The edge base configuration allows for lower power consumption and balances processing power for environments that demand less throughput, such as distributed long-term evolution (LTE) small cell and 5G edge infrastructure.
  • For heavier edge computing and throughput demands, such as enterprise edge infrastructure, the edge plus configuration uses dual processors  to handle the demands of streaming and analytics workloads. As an example, an organization might use Splunk to mine insights from machine-generated data such as server logs.

Capacity – big data configuration: Capacity-oriented servers need to meet the demands of big data and analytics workloads that require more storage capacity and processing power. For example, business intelligence (BI) and data discovery tools, such as Trino (formerly PrestoSQL) and SQL or NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and IBM Db2, tend to require large data sets with potentially large amounts of parallel data ingest. 

  • The capacity base configuration allows for 30TB of data storage with the networking and processing capability to handle data sets of that size.
  • The capacity plus configuration expands to 60TB of data storage with the networking and processing power to handle data sets of that size and speed processing.

Performance configuration: The performance configurations are optimized to meet the demands of artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) and latency-sensitive workloads, such transaction processing.

  • The performance base data node configuration features two 20-core Intel Xeon Gold 6242R processors, 384GB of memory, and two Intel Optane SSD DC P4800X for the OpenShift Data Foundation metadata cache.
  • The performance plus configuration delivers more optimized compute through more cores, more memory, higher bandwidth networking, and additional high-performance storage capacity to handle high-performance inference applications and in-memory machine learning workloads, such as in a distributed environment of Spark.

Dell EMC PowerEdge server configurations

The scalable system architecture behind the PowerEdge R740xd, which has up to 24 NVMe drives, creates the ideal balance between scalability and performance. R740xd’s versatility allows organizations to mix any drive type to create the optimal configuration of NVMe, SSD, and hard disk drives (HDD) for either performance, capacity, or both. R740xd is the platform of choice for software-defined storage.
