RED HAT SUPPORT FOR INFRASTRUCTURE MIGRATION
Combining open source technology, consulting services, and learning subscriptions, the Red Hat® infrastructure migration solution helps customers migrate from expensive, proprietary virtualization infrastructures to modern, flexible alternatives in a safe and methodical manner. Organizations free themselves from long-term contracts and realize cost savings, facilitating accelerated adoption of transformative technologies such as containers, automation, and multicloud management.
The solution also reduces complexity, as the new streamlined infrastructure helps eliminate decades of technical debt accumulated over the years with overlapping technologies, long-forgotten requirements, and “good enough” architectures.
A typical migration journey has three phases:
- Discovery session. In this first phase, Red Hat Consulting engages with an organization in a complimentary session to fully understand and document the requirements and scope of the migration journey.
- Migration pilot. In this phase, the alternative platform is deployed and operationalized. Several pilot migrations take place to ensure all requirements are met for a large-scale migration.
- Migration at scale. In the final phase, the customer migrates workloads at scale, following the documented plan created in the previous phases with support from Red Hat’s Customer Experience and Engagement team.
Gartner reports that a majority of organizations now cite the emergence of digital business projects as the top motivation for IT cost savings.1 Many customers are discovering that they can decrease complexity of management and greatly reduce costs by using Red Hat’s infrastructure migration solution instead of expanding their existing VMware infrastructure.
INFRASTRUCTURE MIGRATION SOLUTION COMPONENTS AND CAPABILITIES
|Discovery session||A free Red Hat Services discovery session is a strategic planning activity that clarifies goals and challenges and aligns key stakeholders on the objectives, dependencies, and results of the desired solution. During the discovery session, a comprehensive analysis of the existing virtualization environment, including operational management and cataloging of applications, takes place. Based on the output from the analysis, an alternative architecture and detailed plan for migration will be developed and used as the basis for implementation.|
The migration pilot is a services-led implementation of 9-12 weeks that includes:
• Deployment of the tooling and framework required to migrate virtual machines (VMs) from the existing virtualization platform to the new environment.
• Validation of migrations for a sample set of VMs of the customer’s choosing.
|Migration at scale||With an alternative platform in operation and a clearly documented plan, customers can begin migrating workloads based on their schedule and application stakeholder needs and they can contact Red Hat Customer Experience and Engagement for ongoing migration support.|
|Infrastructure mapping||Infrastructure mapping allows virtualization and infrastructure teams to define where VMs will be migrated based on their current location. This approach ensures that the appropriate compute, network, and storage resources are available for each migration.|
|Migration plans||Migration plans allow users to break their VM migrations into manageable groups that can be scheduled during the times that are most convenient, such as during maintenance windows for a particular application. Migration plans also allow users to control the behavior of migrations, such as the order in which VMs are migrated.|
|VM conversion||Using the capabilities within the virt-v2v tool, VMs are converted from VMware ESX to Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) formats. VMs are streamed from VMware and injected directly into a new KVM-based hypervisor. The tooling also ensures the appropriate disk format, network interfaces, drivers, and agents to maximize capabilities and performance.|
|Red Hat Learning Subscription||Using the included Red Hat Learning Subscriptions, customers can provide staff with access to all training and development materials offered by Red Hat Training.|
Minimum product versions required to run the solution:
|Red Hat CloudForms||4.7|
|Red Hat Virtualization||4.2.7|
|Red Hat Openstack Platform||14|
