Grab scales to spectacular growth with Red Hat Ansible Tower
Grab automated its IT to simplify management of its IT environment and grow its business, increasing its application uptime from 87% to 99.99%.
In the last 6 months alone, Grab’s ride business has more than doubled, and multiple cities are added to its services each week. To keep pace with demand, the company was deploying new features to production hundreds of times weekly, resulting in an increasingly complex IT environment—and service disruptions. “The way we were doing deployments manually led to anxiety for our passengers and drivers because our systems were not reliable,” said Ditesh Gathani, head of engineering, Singapore, at Grab. “These processes also created anxiety for our engineers. They were scared that if they deployed a new feature, something would break.”
Grab scales to meet growing ride business demand with Red Hat Ansible Tower
Grab sought an open source software solution to its growth-based challenges. It chose Red Hat Ansible Tower, an enterprise IT automation engine, to simplify and automate cloud provisioning, configuration management, application deployment, intra-service orchestration, and many other IT tasks and processes. Ansible Tower also integrates with Amazon Web Services (AWS), Grab’s platform for public cloud deployment. With Ansible Tower, Grab automated all of the backend systems supporting its services in just 2 months. “Red Hat Ansible Tower … helps ensure our multiple daily deployments are predictable and consistent,” said Dharmath Shah, site reliability engineer at Grab.
Using Ansible Tower, Grab can now easily scale to meet demand, automating daily deployments to free up resources for more business-critical work. Also, role-based access enables easy changes and deployments and reduces approval delays. Grab also increased its uptime to 99.99%, eliminating 40% of its downtime in just a few months. In addition, the company simplified its IT management using Ansible Tower’s easy-to-use graphical user interface, which offers informative graphs and progress updates and change tracking for audits and quality control. “Without Red Hat Ansible Tower, we would not have been able to grow at the pace that we have been, and our business would not be where it is today,” said Ditesh.
