Congratulations are in order this week as the Best of Open Source Software Awards have been announced by InfoWorld. The annual awards, known throughout the industry as the Bossies, recognize outstanding work in the open source community. This year, the Bossies named winners in six categories: applications, application development tools, datacenter and cloud software, desktop and mobile software, networking and security software, and big data tools.

We’d like to take a moment to recognize several projects among the winners that are near and dear to us here at Red Hat, including OpenShift, Drools, and Ceph.

OpenShift, Red Hat's Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS), was named among the winners in two categories: best open source application development tools and best open source data center and cloud software. The core OpenShift technology is available in three distinct offerings: OpenShift Online for public cloud; OpenShift Enterprise for private cloud; or OpenShift Origin, the community-based project that serves as the upstream source for both Online and Enterprise.

Drools, which was among the winners in the category of best open source applications, is a leading open source Java rules engine and the upstream community project for our Red Hat JBoss BRMS enterprise product. The business rules management system provides a core business rules engine, web authoring and rules management application, and an Eclipse IDE plugin for core development. Business rules management systems like Drools are often used for things like decision management or situational awareness.

Ceph, a massively scalable, open source, software-defined storage project and the upstream community for Red Hat's Inktank Ceph Enterprise storage solution, was named among winners in the category of best open source data center and cloud software. Delivering object and block storage in one self-managing, self-healing platform with no single point of failure, Ceph ideally replaces legacy storage and provides a single solution for the cloud.

Several other Red Hat products were recently named to the 2014 V3 Technology Awards shortlist, including Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for best virtualization product and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 for product of the year. Red Hat was also short-listed for the best cloud computing provider award. People's Postcode Lottery, a Red Hat customer, is in the running for customer project of the year in recognition of an update to its core lottery system that included Red Hat JBoss Fuse. Voting for the awards is open now through Oct. 22, 2014.

Please join us in congratulating the 2014 Bossie winners, and stay tuned for the results of the 2014 V3 Technology Awards!
