OpenShift application runtimes

Enterprises are transitioning from on-premise, monolithic applications to highly dynamic, polyglot environments using microservices and cloud computing. In this session, we’ll discuss Red Hat OpenShift Application Runtimes, an application platform that runs legacy applications alongside greenfield polyglot microservices on Red Hat OpenShift, helping enterprises embrace microservices and cloud computing at their own pace. You'll learn the tradeoffs of microservices and monolithic architectures, as well as the costs and benefits of deconstructing a monolithic architecture. You'll also learn how legacy applications and greenfield applications written in Eclipse Vert.x, Java Platform, Enterprise Edition (Java EE) and MicroProfile, and Spring Boot can take advantage of a common set of cloud platform services for application interoperability, security, and manageability. With this knowledge, you can build a cloud roadmap that is optimized for your enterprise.

This talk will present the current and future states of the Red Hat Middleware portfolio and associated development tooling that enables teams to develop cloud-native applications leveraging enterprise grade open source middleware. The session will conclude with a discussion about the ‘tip-of-the-spear’ future state of Red Hat’s vision on polyglot development, reactive event-driven frameworks, minimalist runtimes, and advanced development tooling.

Security first: Automating CI/CD pipelines and policing application

Recent public breaches highlight the importance of a security strategy that extends beyond the network perimeter. Applications developed and maintained without security in mind present a likely entry point for malicious attackers. Preventive measures should be taken to reduce vulnerabilities that can avoid zero-day attacks.

As organizations adopt containers, an automated approach to security, testing, and application development is needed to increase productivity and reduce risk.

During this session, you'll learn how the Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform can be used to:

  • Integrate security monitoring software into CI/CD pipelines for containerized applications.

Implementing Enterprise Identity and Access Management in a Microservices World

Although in a DevOps enabled IT world there are stable approaches and best practices for transitioning your workloads into DevOps friendly services, there still remains a large and significant Cybersecurity services gap. Enterprise IAM is typically not taken into consideration in these models and if it is, people quickly find out that these legacy models and stacks do not fit a DevOps CI/CD architecture. Perseus IAM is an IAM Microservices based platform that joins existing IAM stacks to current and future DevOps tooling, including orchestration playbooks for Ansible tower. This session will show key use cases for understanding an IT’s identity and access model, correlating the data and finally normalizing the information for better security services under a DevOps model. In addition, we will be covering an integration model for extending enterprise authorization models to containerization technologies such as Docker.

Dave Johnson

Director, management SA tiger team, Red Hat

Dave Johnson leads a team of pre-sales experts, supporting Red Hat CloudForms, Ansible, Satellite, and Insights. Dave started his career at Red Hat prior to its IPO, ultimately building and leading the sales engineering organization that penetrated the US Oil & Gas, EDA, and MSP markets. At Ansible, Dave was lucky enough to be the very first employee, leading the customer development efforts that determined what products to build and how to market them. Dave holds a B.S. in electrical engineering and a B.S. in computer engineering from North Carolina State University.

Laurent Domb

Principal cloud solutions architect, Red Hat

Laurent Domb is a Principal Cloud Solutions Architect working for Red Hat. He is a Red Hat Certified Architect VI and a DevOps professional. Next to his technical certifications he also holds an EMBA degree in general management as well as a BSc in applied computer sciences. His IT career started in 2002 by studying applied computer sciences at the University of Northwestern Switzerland and founding the VIBB Unix User Group (VUUG). During university he started teaching Linux and Norman data defense and worked as a Linux admin at Wagner Kunz aktuare. After graduating, he was hired by Trivadis AG, a Swiss consultancy as a Linux/open source consultant where he worked for different banks, insurances, and automotive industries in Switzerland, Germany, Norway, and Sweden. Laurent also lead the Trivadis IT department where he was responsible for transforming the traditional way of IT thinking into a new, modern agile IT department. Later in his career Laurent took over the service engineering department at OPITZ CONSULTING Switzerland where he was responsible for building up the consulting services. In 2010 he moved to America where he worked as a Linux System engineer at OnSIp. In 2013 Laurent was hired by Red Hat as a Senior Linux consultant where he transformed multiple financial firms from traditional IT environments into agile IT environments. Today, as a Principal cloud solutions architect, Laurent helps customers to understand, envision, and build successful cloud environments.

Jamie Duncan

Cloud architect, Red Hat

Jamie has been at Red Hat for five years, focusing on the problems unique to Public Sector customers. Prior to Red Hat, Jamie worked in the ‘big web’ world and spent some time at a bioinformatics startup. At Red Hat, Jamie focuses on cloud-enabling technologies like OpenShift, Ansible, and OpenStack. With most of these technologies, he has been involved with them since their infancy. In his spare time, Jamie is building a small farm west of Richmond, Va., with dogs, cats, frogs, chickens, deer, and a very understanding wife and amazing young daughter named Elizabeth.

Lucy Kerner

Principal technical marketing manager for security, Red Hat

Lucy Kerner is currently the Principal technical marketing manager for security at Red Hat. In this role, she is the global security technical evangelist and helps drive thought leadership and the global go-to-market strategy for security across the entire Red Hat portfolio. In addition, she helps create and deliver security related technical content to the field, customers, and partners. Prior to this role, she was a Senior cloud solutions architect for the North America Public Sector team at Red Hat. Lucy has over 15 years of professional experience as both a software and hardware development engineer and a pre-sales solutions architect. Prior to joining Red Hat, she worked at IBM as both a Mainframe microprocessor design engineer and a pre-sales solutions architect for IBM x86 servers. She has also interned at Apple, Cadence, Lockheed Martin, and MITRE, where she worked on both software and hardware development. Lucy graduated from Carnegie Mellon University with an M.S. and B.S. in electrical and computer engineering and a minor in Spanish.

Michael Walker

Global director, Open Innovation Labs, Red Hat

Mike Walker is the Global director of Red Hat’s Open Innovation Labs, whose mission is to make it easier and quicker for customers to bring innovative ideas to life. Mike has 16 years of IT engineering and consulting experience with emerging technologies, including specializations in application development, cloud computing, data integration, high-performance computing, and distributed systems. Mike’s teams work across a variety of verticals including financial services, retail, manufacturing, healthcare, insurance, public sector, and ISVs. Mike holds a B.A. in computer science and mathematics from Emory University, and an M.S. in computer science from University of Virginia.

John Clingan

Senior principal product manager, OpenShift, Red Hat

John Clingan is a Senior principal product manager at Red Hat for OpenShift Application Runtimes, which optimizes cloud-native development with Eclipse Vert.x, WildFly Swarm, Node.js, and Spring Boot for development for OpenShift/Kubernetes. John is also an Eclipse MicroProfile co-founder.

Derrick Kittler

Chief architect, Red Hat

Derrick brings over 19 years of experience in software development, engineering, and enterprise architecture as an entrepreneur, within startups and large enterprises. More specifically, Derrick has spent the majority of his career developing highly scalable, fault-tolerant, business-critical applications based on open source technologies. In his role as Chief architect, Derrick invests time working with Red Hat’s strategic customers to create alignments between business initiatives and Red Hat’s vast open source portfolio of technologies. Derrick has experience at all levels of the application stack and holds a deep passion for distributed data-driven applications and hybrid cloud architectures.

Ray Ploski

Application development practice lead, Red Hat

Ray Ploski is the Application development practice lead for Red Hat North America. He has been an active contributor, consultant, developer, architect, and trainer, aiding organizations and companies in adopting open source for the past 15 years. Ray has been regularly recognized for his contributions in advancing the adoption of open source and is one of the few Red Hat employees to have earned the Chairman's Award. In his current role, he is responsible for evolving the capabilities of Red Hat’s Solutions architects.

Samuel Tauil

OpenShift Solutions Architect, Red Hat

Working at Red Hat for eight years as an OpenShift Solutions Architect. In this role, Samuel conducts architecture workshops, developer workshops, proof of concepts and other educational Red Hat sessions on PaaS, Containerization, DevOps and Microservices to drive the adoption into the OpenShift Container Platform and other technologies in the Red Hat portfolio.

Justin Goldsmith

Technical consulting architect, Financial Services, Red Hat

Justin Goldsmith, a Technical consulting architect in Red Hat’s Financial Services practice, has worked extensively with Red Hat® OpenShift, successfully migrating legacy applications to containers and building net-new OpenShift native applications. Justin focuses on CI/CD and DevOps, emphasizing automation benefits in each step of the software development life cycle. Recently, he's been stressing the importance of including security analysis of applications upfront in the CI/CD process.

Aldo Pietropaolo

Aldo Pietropaolo is Chief Security Strategist at Good Dog Labs, a Lighthouse company that specializes in Cybersecurity Microservices, DevOps and delivery of information security services and technology in a DevOps model for various industries. Before Good Dog Labs, Aldo was Director of Services and IAM Advisor at various professional services organizations. Mr. Pietropaolo was an Advisory Manager in Financial Services for PwC, specializing in information security and identity and access management. His expertise in security includes Microservices architectures, infrastructure automation and DevOps approaches, as well as Application (SOA) Governance, Application Quality Management, Runtime Management, Identity Federation, Web Access Management, Security Architecture, Identity Auditing and Identity Event Monitoring.

Josh Minthorne

Director, Levvel

With over 10 years of technical and management consulting experience, Josh has a deep understanding of how aligning business strategy and technology helps businesses succeed. He has successfully delivered innovative solutions to Fortune 100 companies in Healthcare, Insurance, Investment and Personal Banking, Logistics and Medical Device industries. Josh began his career at Amentra, which was acquired by Red Hat in 2008, where he served as a Senior Consultant. He earned his M.B.A from North Carolina State University with concentrations in Innovation Management, Services Management and Management Consulting and Marketing Management. Josh brings a passion for helping Levvel’s clients innovate and transform how they operate.

Austin Buddington is a Software and DevOps consultant from Atlanta, Georgia. When he’s not writing applications or automating cloud infrastructure, he’s probably working on his Hydroponic pepper garden or exploring breweries in his city of residence Charlotte, North Carolina.

Victor Wong

CEO and Founder, BlockApps

Victor is a recognized thought leader in the blockchain space, having organized several of the first Ethereum hackathons and presented at several conferences, including Ethereum’s DevCon1 and EY’s Innovation Summit. At BlockApps, he helped define the STRATO architecture to solve key blockchain issues of data transparency and scaling.
