Red Hat believes in celebrating the power and contributions that IT professionals make to open source technologies. For IT professionals, attention on the job is often a sign that something has gone wrong. When things are going right no one thinks about system administrators.

They think about them when the website is down, the mission-critical application is unavailable, or people are filing into the hallways because they cannot access their e-mail. The Red Hat Certified Professional of the Year award is an opportunity to celebrate these unsung heroes — not just the award winners themselves, but the worldwide community of RHCPs.

2017 RHCPOYThis year’s winner, Orhan Bıyıklıoğlu, RHCE (seen here accepting his award on stage at Red Hat Summit from Jim Whitehurst, Red Hat CEO) has been working as a systems administrators at Turkcell for the last 10 years. Turkcell is one of the largest telecom operators in Europe and has realized considerable cost saving by migrating almost all of their workloads from UNIX to Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Orhan was responsible for introducing Red Hat technologies within Turkcell and the success of this project has changed the image of Linux® in his organization.

As a result Turkcell recently chose to deploy Red Hat® OpenStack® Platform with OpenStack Swift for data storage as more flexible, scalable platform to meet the demands of its consumer cloud storage product. Turcell’s lifebox is a cloud-based storage offering lets Turkcell’s customers store and share photos, music, and videos, as well as document files, in the cloud. With support from Red Hat’s enterprise services—including consulting, training, and certification—Turkcell used the platform to deploy new features faster, simplify management, while reducing costs, and achieve the scalability to accommodate expected growth. Orhan explains, "Red Hat Training and Certification has impacted my technical skills and enabled me to stay ahead professionally. I have applied my expertise in Red Hat technologies to help Turkcell design, implement, and maintain a robust and flexible IT infrastructure, while also achieving cost savings. We are using products like Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat OpenStack and Ansible in our environment. Today we are running one of the largest Red Hat OpenStack implementations to provide our customers cloud-based storage offerings."
