Data is all around you, it’s plentiful and inescapable. From the moment you wake up to the moment you go to bed. It’s on your smartphone, your tablet and that laptop or PC on your desk. Organizations are using data to improve healthcare, create better transportation systems, provide a more effective sales experience, study weather patterns and maybe, just maybe, help change the world. So how do you make all that data matter? The first step is to share it.

"Starting Small: Open Data in Chile"—the latest documentary in the Open Source Stories series from Red Hat—explores what it takes to make open data meaningful in the lives of everyday people.

Through the course of the film, you’ll meet the scholars, artisans, makers, regulators and conservationists who are bringing data to life in Chile. They’re using open data to preserve pristine environments, conserve resources, and keep alive traditional ways of work and living. In Patagonia, a coding conservationist joins tourists and landowners to take a data-informed approach to preserving natural beauty. In a village outside Chile’s capital, optical sensors collect the data to make old-world artisanship more sustainable―but only with insights from an open-minded potter/partner. And in the halls of the national energy ministry, a government works to build trust through energy data transparency. They’re all part of the same effort to activate data.

Like other installments of the Open Source Stories documentary series, "Starting Small: Open Data in Chile" underscores the ways openness is a catalyst for change. Open source is changing the world in many different ways—not just impacting digital technologies, but also the way we work together to solve some of the world's most pressing problems. At Red Hat, we've long understood the power of collaboration to produce amazing results. With Open Source Stories, we’re showing what people can do when they make things in the open—because when we share, we thrive.

The film features notable experts including: Javiera de la Fuente, founder, Al Sur Del Sur Foundation; Kiumarz Goharriz Chahin, Jefe del Departamento de Información y Estadísticas, National Energy Commission, Government of Chile; and Josian Yaksic, President, Reserva Cerro Paine.
