Cloud infrastructure: Open source is where it's at

When we say "cloud infrastructure" we're talking about everything we need to build a cloud environment. That includes physical servers, public or private cloud software, software-defined storage, and virtualization software. Your infrastructure for cloud applications needs to match the speed, governance, and budget requirements from your business. That's where open source projects can help.

But it's not just about open source code. Working within developer communities (like OpenStack) can align their new ideas with your needs. Bringing in an integrated suite of cloud infrastructure and other technology platforms at the same time leads to simplified operation for your IT team and incremental adoption—not a wholesale rip-and-replace. Keep reading to learn about open source cloud infrastructure and how it’s being used in the wild.

Why the future of the cloud is open

How you build your cloud determines how competitive, flexible, and cost-effective your business can be for the next 10 years. Done right, a cloud can redirect resources from maintaining the status quo to supporting new ideas. Migrating to the cloud helps, but only an open hybrid cloud approach delivers the full business value promised by cloud computing.

Survey says

How are IT teams coping with public and private cloud?

  • 70% of respondents say cost reduction is the top motivation for moving workloads to the public cloud.
  • 73% say the main goal in moving their business into cloud services is workloads running more smoothly, with fewer disruptions.
  • 58% say data security is the most vexing challenge in moving to cloud technologies.
  • 10-29% is the number of apps most companies are placing in the cloud. That number is expected to grow to 70% or more in the next 2 years.

Cloud solution helps boost U.S. rail safety

Positive train control (PTC) technology automatically stops trains before certain types of accidents occur. PTC is required in the U.S., but implementing it is beyond the financial means and expertise of many railroads.

Herzog Technologies, a rail signal and communications company, worked with Red Hat to develop an innovative cloud solution that lets railroads of all sizes adopt PTC technology—at a fraction of the cost of in-house PTC deployment—helping make rail transportation safer and more efficient.
