About the company

Duke Health is a leading healthcare network dedicated to providing outstanding patient care, educating tomorrow’s healthcare leaders, and discovering new and better ways to treat disease through research. To help achieve its goal of being the top academic research institution in the U.S., Duke Health used Red Hat® enterprise open source technology to create PACE, a private cloud environment. As a result, Duke Health has streamlined development, deployment, and security, reducing compute resource access time by 97.78%.

The path to success

Challenge: Support healthcare breakthroughs with collaborative research

To discover new and better ways to treat disease, Duke Health’s researchers need to be able to quickly and effectively collaborate, analyze data, and work securely. To support these capabilities, Duke Health wanted to create a private cloud environment that would let researchers provision computing resources as needed—with the necessary security and compliance. “We faced demands by the research community to have a more agile computing environment … with faster delivery times and a method to tightly control access to computer resources and patient data,” said James E. Fayson, Jr., senior product manager at the Analytics Center of Excellence (ACE) at Duke Health Technology Solutions.

Duke Health creates efficient medical research environment with Red Hat

Solution: Build an open private cloud solution

Duke Health worked with Red Hat Consulting to create Protected Analytics Computing Environment (PACE), a private cloud infrastructure, using Red Hat OpenStack® Platform and other Red Hat enterprise solutions. PACE lets users install approved applications and access analytic resources. “Within our OpenStack deployment, we’ve provided a dedicated computing environment for our researchers and data analysts,” said Fayson. “We’ve built a protected marketplace rich with analytic tools, access to sensitive data, and compute resources that never existed previously in our organization.”

Results: Gain efficiencies with innovative processes

Its new Red Hat environment helps Duke Health researchers provision resources faster. Delivery time for an OpenStack instance has decreased 97.78%—from 90 days to 48 hours. In addition, Duke Health established transparent, role-based data security to ensure compliance with industry regulations. Also, Duke Health reduced IT costs by migrating to enterprise open source software. “Our design goal was to avoid all proprietary software in the implementation of the infrastructure for this environment. … We’ve been able to provide a virtual private cloud environment without any of the fees associated with deploying proprietary vendor technologies,” said Sean DeZurik, system analyst III at Duke Health Technology Solutions.

Red Hat provides a stable release of OpenStack, supported by consultants who can help us to implement changes. We could have never implemented OpenStack as quickly without Red Hat Consulting.
