We had a choice between proprietary and open source private cloud solutions. … Open source would help us avoid vendor lock-in. We chose Red Hat primarily because they are very close to upstream development, giving us access to new features quickly.

Eugene Yeo, Group CIO, MyRepublic

Overview

Internet service provider MyRepublic faced challenges managing growth with a fragmented legacy IT infrastructure. To achieve greater flexibility and scalability, MyRepublic migrated to a unified private cloud using Red Hat® solutions. As a result, the company cut time to market for new services, improved management and availability, and substantially reduced hardware costs and total cost of ownership (TCO).

MyRepublic adopts unified cloud with Red Hat OpenStack Platform

MyRepublic moved from a legacy IT infrastructure to a unified private cloud platform, consolidating and standardizing its IT assets to save money and improve service.

The path to success

Challenge: Consolidate and standardize IT assets

MyRepublic’s business was thriving, but its IT architecture restricted flexibility and innovation. The company had underused equipment, and a lack of standardization meant assets could not be pooled and scaled to handle traffic spikes. Also, MyRepublic’s legacy hardware was reaching the end of its warranty and support, and the company faced repeated, large investments. MyRepublic needed to consolidate and standardize its IT assets into a private cloud, Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) platform to improve agility and scalability.

Case study

MyRepublic adopts unified cloud with Red Hat OpenStack Platform

Solution: Use open source to unify IT infrastructure

MyRepublic reviewed several cloud platforms before choosing to deploy Red Hat OpenStack® Platform, supported by Red Hat CloudForms management software and Red Hat Ceph Storage. “We had a choice between proprietary and open source private cloud solutions,” said Eugene Yeo, group CIO at MyRepublic. “Open source would help us avoid vendor lock-in. We chose Red Hat primarily because they are very close to upstream development, giving us access to new features quickly.” With help from Red Hat Consulting, MyRepublic successfully deployed its new IT platform across the region, including Singapore, Indonesia, and Australia.

Results: Improve performance and savings

MyRepublic’s cloud platform improved the ability to meet short-term demand changes with greater flexibility, scalability, and availability. It also speeds time to market with simpler, automated deployment, delivering new services quicker and generating more business. “We’re adding a thousand subscribers a week in our latest market entrant,” said Eugene. “The growth is phenomenal, and it wouldn’t have been possible without Red Hat.” In addition, the open source platform also reduced hardware costs by 30% and cut year-on-year TCO by double-digit percentages.

Our unified platform and private cloud will be incredibly valuable because it’s simple to start new projects without additional hardware or storage costs. Red Hat has been a really good partner. They were at our side and always available. It has been a really amazing experience to see them collaborate so closely with us.
