PREPARING FOR NEXT-GEN HYBRID CLOUD MANAGEMENT The promise for unlimited resources on the cloud and the easy of use comes with the burden of control. Managing cost in the cloud has become increasingly more complex as customers share their workloads across multiple vendors and locations, created with the easy of a click. More companies are embracing a hybrid cloud solution with public and private cloud solutions in addition to virtualization and on premise, and are trying to regain control on their consumption.

The Hybrid Cloud Cost Management (HCCM) tool’s goal is to make a unified cost management environment encompassing the customer’s entire infrastructure. With it’s prototype release, HCCM allows customers to understand and analyze their current resources and costs for Amazon Web Services. Ultimately the tool will provide these services on the four footprints in addition to forecasting future resources and costs, optimizing resources and consumption, and identifying unusual patterns of usage across baremetal, virtualized, private/public cloud, and OpenShift. This session will demonstrate installing, configuring, managing, and running reports with real data to showcase benefits to the customer for consolidated hybrid cloud cost management. To support the hybrid cost model, we will show how we build a cost model for the private cloud so that we can measure usage and use it to calculate and show , costs, and performance and optimizations, just like a public cloud.

DEVELOP IOT SOLUTIONS WITH CONTAINERS AND SERVERLESS PATTERNS The Internet of Things (IoT) is expected to generate a diverse range of data types that will need different mechanisms to process and trigger actions. Combined with other considerations, like total cost of ownership, required skillset, and operations, the backend solution may be composed of different architectures and patterns.

In this hands-on lab, you'll learn how to build a containerized. intelligent IoT solution that can process different data types using the elasticity of a container platform, such as Red Hat OpenShift Container Platform, and serverless architectures to execute on-demand functions in response to IoT events. Using the qualities of each architectural style, developers can focus on writing code without worrying about provisioning and operating server resources, regardless of the scale. The methodologies exemplified within this lab can be used by companies looking to use their cloud computing infrastructure to build complex and robust IoT solutions.

SERVERLESS WITH OPENSHIFT Red Hat OpenShift Cloud Functions (OCF) enable customers to build serverless applications on top of OpenShift. This session will explore the concepts, technologies and mechanisms that make it possible as well as applicable use-cases. Until recently Serverless has been mostly limited to use within specific cloud providers (AWS, Azure, etc.) with little ability to move between clouds. A number of open source serverless projects are challenging that model with the ability to run in any cloud, or on your own infrastructure, so you get the benefits of serverless without the lock-in, which is one of the key principles of OCF. Additionally, the session will explore the distinction between simple Functions-as-a-Service and the ecosystems that encompass true serverless platforms and how microservices play its part in such architectures Duration: 60 mins

ARCHITECTURE WORKSHOP - REAL LIVE SCENARIO - HOW TO MODERNIZE MONOLITHIC APPLICATIONS ACROSS INTERFACE LAYER, BUSINESS LOGIC, DATA LAYER AND INTEGRATION A multinational property exchange and settlement agency (PXS.com) has an inhouse developed, 100% java based ERP and Asset Management system (PXSCore), which currently integrates with other systems via IBM MQ (message/event based).

Unfortunately over many years that system has organically grown and it becomes harder and harder (ie more time consuming) to put more functions and features into the core system, which hinders the competitiveness of PXS. PXS is losing market share to its’ competitors as they have more advanced features, better analytics and a slicker web-based UI than PXS.

Collaborate with your peers to solve this problem by suggesting a design/architectural approach across UI, Business Logic and Data layer.

DEEP DIVE HANDS-ON SESSION ON OPENSHIFT AGGREGATED LOGGING AND TUNING A new approach to logging is required for cloud-native environments enabled by technologies like OpenShift. You must be aware that services and instances are dynamic, regularly moving between machines, limiting the utility of traditional logging solutions. Logging is an integral part of the administration of your applications and infrastructure, but logging can be complex. The session will give you an overview of the log aggregation stack which is available with the OpenShift Container Platform. The logging subsystem consists of multiple components abbreviated as the "EFK" stack: Elasticsearch, Fluentd, Kibana. The EFK stack aggregates logs from hosts and applications, whether coming from multiple containers or even deleted pods.

The session also covers, how to optimize Fluentd’s performance within single and multi process. With more traffic, Fluentd tends to be more CPU bound. We will see how to utilize multiple CPU cores to enhance the performance.
