The business value of Red Hat Certification

Red Hat Training and Certification is pleased to share the results of a study conducted by IDC to assess the business value of having employees earn Red Hat Certifications. According to IDC research, professionals certified by Red Hat manage more servers, resolve problems faster, and experience less downtime. Additionally, certified employees ramp up faster, stay longer and perform better.

IDC’s analysis shows that companies with Red Hat Certified IT staff achieve a three-year return on investment of 403%. This return is due to significant IT team productivity gains and improved operational efficiencies.

Key findings addressing operational and team efficiency:

67% less unplanned downtime
21% less staff time to deploy physical servers
49% more physical servers per full time employee
25% less staff time to deploy virtual machines
88% more virtual machines per full time employee
34% less time spent with operational tasks
50% faster resolution of issues
142% increase in number of new application features added per year
34% faster application development lifecycle

Key findings addressing the hiring, onboarding and retention of IT staff:

38% faster to reach full productivity
15% longer tenure by certified employees
10% greater chance of becoming high-performing contributors

Randy Russell is the director of Certification and leads the team that develops and delivers Red Hat's certification programs and exams. A long-time proponent of performance-based testing, he has served on the board and as president and chairman of the Performance Testing Council, as well as having presented on this subject and others at industry conferences such as the Association of Test Publishers, the European Association of Test Publishers, CeDMA and TSIA. Prior to joining Red Hat, Russell was a system administrator and programmer at an environmental economics consulting firm.
