We are excited to share an April 14, 2015, post from the Yahoo! Engineering blog by Yahoo's Narayan P.P.S., Sambit Samal, and Satheesh Nanniyur titled "Cloud Object Storage at Exabyte Scale." The blog describes Yahoo's deployment of the community version of Ceph software for its Flickr and Mail applications on its Cloud Object Store (COS), and reinforces Ceph's ability to effectively support web-scale object storage applications with reliable performance.
The Ceph Community is an open source community dedicated to developing and delivering Ceph software-defined storage software. Sage Weil originally designed Ceph as part of his Ph.D. research in Storage Systems at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Today, the Ceph Community has nearly 500 developers. These contributors are individual participants as well as contributors from leading technology organizations around the world. SanDisk, for example, recently announced it contributed software to Ceph for significant performance enhancements for flash storage. Ceph storage software provides applications with object, block, and file storage in a single, unified storage cluster. This makes Ceph flexible, highly reliable and easy to manage.
We are extremely proud that Yahoo uses Ceph software to store and manage Flickr and Mail objects, and believe this is indicative of growing interest from enterprises in deploying software-defined storage in high performing web-scale environments based on Ceph.
