Open source is a key ingredient for innovation at Amadeus and we’ve enjoyed a productive relationship with Red Hat, innovating the open source way. During the course of our work together, we’ve learned a lot, especially about using Red Hat OpenShift as the underlying open source platform for delivering container-based applications at scale.
Below are three of the most important lessons we’ve learned from this collaboration:
You don't become an open source company overnight
Just proclaiming you’re an open source company doesn’t make it so. It takes time to find top-notch, motivated people and a lot of preparation for the required investment. By having the best people in place, you can learn and grow from mistakes and constructive criticism. It’s also good to be accompanied by partners with experience in the open source field, like Red Hat.
Using well-known open-source applications help recruitment
The best and brightest, both internally and externally, want to use and work on open source applications that are well known, such as Docker, Kubernetes, and OpenShift. This simplifies on-boarding as prospects will already know and understand these applications. The use of well-known applications also heightens the visibility of the company using them.
It’s important to validate ideas and offer opinions externally
Working with open source allows you to share your ideas with the outside world, so you can pinpoint, correct, and learn from mistakes. It’s also provides an opportunity to contribute your opinion and build a reputation as an open source influencer.
