Open Leadership Seminar at 10:15 - 12:00

Open leadership is essentially a bold invitation. It’s an invitation for passionate and talented people to fully invest themselves in making a difference together. Open leadership invites people to bring their whole selves, and best selves, to work each day. It invites people to be “all in.”

Open leadership obviously doesn’t happen without open leaders. But what does it mean to be an open leader? According to Jim Whitehurst, president and CEO of Red Hat:

"Being an open leader means creating the context others need to do their best work."

People do their best work when their passion (e.g., motivation, drive, sense of purpose, values) and talent (e.g., knowledge, skills, competencies) align with the culture, purpose, and opportunities that the organization offers. Together, these elements form the “context” that Jim Whitehurst talks about.

Creating the Context

At this point in our journey, we are working diligently to create the context that continually unleashes the power of people to generate value for themselves, one another, and stakeholders. While every organization is different, we believe that the elements of Culture, Purpose, and Opportunity provide a framework that anyone can use.

Culture: Most organizations recognize the tremendous importance and impact of culture. What few seem to do, however, is to actively try to harness it. At Red Hat, we know that our culture is a powerful force that runs through our company: sometimes we need to ride it and sometimes we need to direct it. At no time can we ignore it. Leaders shape culture and in turn are shaped by it.

Purpose: While it can be argued that everyone is purpose-driven to some extent, there is no doubt that people who fall in the millennial and Gen Z populations have a strong need to find meaning in their work. At Red Hat, we continually share our mission, vision, values and strategy. Much of this is done through storytelling. We invite our associates to share their stories and explore how their “why” (purpose) aligns with Red Hat’s purpose.

Opportunity: All organizations, including Red Hat, have constraints on resources, especially headcount. Being a high growth company, we are constantly challenged to expand and scale our capabilities. This involves more than hiring great people. We actively try to bridge this challenge by encouraging everyone to be a leader. This makes perfect sense since leaders expand their impact by lifting up others. Essentially we have leaders building and leveraging other leaders, something we call exponential leadership.

Still a Work in Progress

Open leadership is a relatively new frontier that is still being explored, mapped and tested. It is promising but difficult terrain. At Red Hat, we pride ourselves on being among the pioneers of this territory.

We still have much to learn from our associates, partners, customers, and others who are on the journey with us. And, we know we will all benefit from sharing our successes and failures along the way. That’s what open leaders do.
