Problems with installation and configuration of Front Page extensions

1. Is it easy to set up the Microsoft FrontPage extensions in SWS?

It is far from simple and it's impossible with SWS.

Though many web presence providers would like to run Front Page extensions on Red Hat Linux the extensions will not function or even install with the Secure Web Server. In order to run the extensions you will have to uninstall SWS and install a non-SSL version of Apache.

2. But I still need to have Front Page extensions for my users, what should I do?

Front Page 98 Extensions are available for download from Microsoft, see:
Front Page 98 Extensions

Front Page 2000 Extensions are available for download from Microsoft see:
Front Page 2000 Extensions

Additionally, Ready to Run Software, Inc. provides Front Page extensions for Linux. The URL for Ready to Run is: RTR

All of this software is available as source code which you must compile.

3. I have a problem with Apache and FrontPage extensions. I can open the root web ok, but when I try to open a per-user web I get an error. Example: http://host/~user where user is public_html. Is this a problem with apache?

You need to confirm that the ~user/public_html directory, in your apache configuration files, is set to AllowOverride All. Like this:

AllowOverride All

4. Where can I get some instructions to help me install the FP extensions?

Ready to Run maintains a cursory installation document for FP extensions. We've made it a part of our own documentation. Here's the URL: RTR SERK

The Server Extensions Resource Kit also has information on installing Front Page extensions.
