The primary owner of the National high-voltage Electricity Transmission Grid chooses Red Hat and JBoss solutions for reliability and security

Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced that Terna Rete Elettrica Nazionale, the primary owner of the National high-voltage Electricity Transmission Grid that is responsible for the transmission and dispatching of energy throughout Milan, has selected Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss Enterprise Middleware as the exclusive platform for its mission-critical applications.

The collaboration between Red Hat and Terna has enabled the organisation to migrate the enterprise systems it uses to manage and operate the National Electricity System to an open source platform.
One of the main priorities for Terna’s IT division is to ensure continuous high performance and secure management of all the applications needed to operate the National Electricity Transmission Grid. Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss Enterprise Application Platform have proven to be robust and reliable, and have met Terna’s mission-critical needs.

In addition to enterprise applications based on Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the partnership between Red Hat and Terna also includes the use of JBoss Enterprise Application Platform for the optimization of key applications such as Borsa dell’Energia, an energy trading platform based on bids. Terna initially used the open source solutions provide by the community-led JBoss.org, but after implementing Oracle solutions, the company decided to upgrade to Red Hat’s enterprise middleware platform, JBoss Enterprise Application Platform, to gain access to the expertise of Red Hat Support.

“We are extremely excited about this partnership”, said Gianni Anguilletti, country sales manager at Red Hat Italia. “Terna has achieved success with a combination of our two compelling enterprise platforms, Red Hat Enterprise Linux and JBoss Enterprise Application Platform. It plans to pursue an ambitious infrastructure development investment strategy in the near future, and we are very proud that our solutions have been selected to support Terna’s various technology innovation initiatives.”
